I know first-hand how invisible and unsupported military wives are when domestic abuse strikes. I have seen the red tape, the enforced silence, and the systemic complicity. I have lived it, I have had enough, and I am stepping up to change it.

This project runs directly alongside our bigger picture mission at Finally Free CIC to build long-term safe shelters across the UK. However, military wives are a completely forgotten community. We are launching Operation Safe Ground - the UK's first dedicated shelter project designed specifically for military wives and partners fleeing domestic abuse.

This is a vital, tailored support system because the military institution itself will not protect you. Traditional options provided by the forces are fundamentally designed to move you out of sight and out of mind - frequently shuffling families into the Cotswold Centre for a strict maximum of six weeks. Any outside help that does exist is highly limited, strictly regiment-specific, or unit-dependent. If you manage to access it, you are simply one of the lucky ones.

The Power of Our Independence as a CIC
I am a former military wife. I spent my entire life inside the military bubble. I know exactly what support systems exist, what gaps are left wide open, and the terrifying lengths to which the military and its surrounding community will go to protect the institution. They protect the system - they do not protect you.

In a closed community where speaking up results in immediate harassment, bullying, and complete ostrasisation, having a real, independent support network is a matter of survival.

This is a mission built by survivors, for survivors, and led by women who truly understand the distinct isolation of military life - from overseas postings to systemic failures at home.

Our choice to register specifically as a Community Interest Company (CIC) rather than a traditional charity was entirely deliberate.

We do not seek, nor will we accept, government funding. We rely 100% on public donations. When a charity takes government money, the state can and will dictate exactly who they are allowed to help, how they operate, and how many people they are permitted to support.

As an independent CIC funded solely by the community, the government cannot tell us what to do. We retain absolute freedom to help whenever, wherever, and however we see fit, ensuring no military system can ever interfere with our mission to protect you. And trust me they do.

To help us demonstrate the true scale of this hidden crisis to the public and grow our network of support, we need your voices.

The more women we hear from, the stronger our independent collective becomes. You are not alone, and we are building a safer alternative.

Practical Guidance for Separating from an Abusive Military Spouse
If you are planning to leave a military spouse - or have already done so - here is honest, lived-experience advice from current and former wives. This is the reality the official chain of command will not tell you, but it is exactly what you need to know to protect yourself.

Military Charities and What to Expect
  • Impartiality Warning: Many prominent military charities are not truly independent. The majority operate in alignment with Ministry of Defence (MOD) agendas and frequently side with your spouse’s chain of command.
  • Army Welfare Service (AWS): This service is MOD-run and rarely impartial. They can offer basic emotional support, but they rarely provide practical, independent advocacy for a leaving spouse.
  • The Royal British Legion (RBL): They can assist with temporary housing requests, extensions to remain in Service Family Accommodation (SFA), food vouchers, furniture, white goods, and local school placements. Again, not impartial and the help they provide is very selective.
  • SSAFA: They offer similar practical provisions to the RBL, but responses can be slow. Persistent, daily follow-up is absolutely essential.
  • The Cotswold Centre:Avoid this option if at all possible, particularly if you are currently utilising your legal 93 days in SFA. It is highly institutionalised, temporary, and rarely suits the needs of a recovering family

Your Legal Rights in Service Family Accommodation (SFA)
You are legally entitled to remain in your SFA for 93 days from the exact date your spouse officially changes their personal status (PStat) from married to separated.

During this 93-day window, your spouse is required to move into the single living element (the block), leaving you and your children in the marital home. Use this time immediately to protect your future:
  • Apply for financial support: File for Universal Credit and Child Maintenance instantly. If your ex-partner cooperates, processing can take up to 3 months. If they block the process, it can take up to 6 months.
  • Secure welfare documentation: Demand a formal letter from the unit welfare officer confirming your tenancy in the SFA, the exact rent amount, and the CILOCT (council tax contribution). Universal Credit requires this specific proof to help cover your housing costs. This is incase you are staying longer then the 93 days. Before that your ex has to pay.
If you must remain in the property beyond the 93-day limit, ensure your ex-partner completes their official march-out paperwork on Day 93. They remain legally liable for all utility bills and property costs until that date.

On Day 94, you must immediately:
  • Register the gas and electricity accounts directly in your own name.
  • Take direct responsibility for the local council tax equivalent (CILOCT).
  • Source specialised buildings and contents insurance. Many civilian insurers will not cover SFA properties - check your policy terms carefully to ensure compliance with Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) rules.

Confronting Financial Abuse and Allowance Manipulation
Financial abuse is highly prevalent within military families, particularly affecting stay-at-home mothers who lack an independent income. If you are being cut off from household funds, contact your unit Padre or independent welfare resources immediately.
  • Local Overseas Allowance (LOA) Abuse: When posted abroad, your partner receives an enhanced LOA explicitly intended to support you and your children. If they withhold these funds, it is financial abuse.
  • The Hidden Costs: Base housing costs abroad can be exceptionally low (ranging from £0 to £250 depending on rank), water utilities are free, and gas or electricity is deducted at a predictable flat rate with zero council tax. If you are constantly told there is no money despite these allowances, start asking questions.

Addressing Bullying, Harassment, and Assault
Bullying, toxic clique culture, and sexual assault occur within the military framework far more than the institution will ever publicly admit. The standard, institutional responses are gaslighting tactics designed to minimise your experience:
  • "This happens on civilian streets too."
  • "I have served for over twenty years and never seen this happen."
The MOD repeatedly protects its own assets and perpetrators, leaving the reporting survivor discredited, isolated, and pushed out of the community.
If you are facing this reality:
  • Retain a solicitor who possesses specialised, demonstrable knowledge of military law.
  • Contact the Centre for Military Justice for entirely free, independent, and expert legal advice. They are frequently under-resourced and facing high demand, but they are fully on your side.

Understanding Eviction Notices
If you receive official-looking eviction notices from Pinnacle or Amey, do not panic. These are standard administrative steps, but they do not equal immediate homelessness.

In many cases, families can legally remain in the property for 12 to 24 months whilst fighting arbitrary removal. Legal Aid remains available and covers housing disputes. Furthermore, your final relocation move as a separated spouse is contractually covered and paid for by the military.

This Is the Reality of Military Life

Leaving an abusive military marriage is an uphill battle. You will likely lose your social circle, face intense community gaslighting, and feel completely isolated. But remember this: you are not weak, you are not losing your mind, and you are not alone.

Military life is routinely sold to the public as a pristine fairy tale. For many wives behind closed doors, it is a personal war zone.

We are building a completely independent, uncompromising network of safety. It starts right here with Operation Safe Ground.
