Trust Issues, Pick-Me Culture & the Great Social Media Mirage

By Dope Soul Village - where we don’t do fake vibes or filtered personalities

Let’s have a real chat about trust, pick-me energy, and the circus of fake personalities on social media. Because honestly? The internet has become a glitter-covered funhouse of narcissists, self-serving opportunists, and people who think “good morals” is something you buy from an influencer’s link in bio.

Don’t get me wrong - there are good people out there. Genuine, honest, heart-of-gold humans who actually care. But they’re about as common as unicorns riding mopeds into Tesco. Rare. Magical. Endangered.

The Digital Pick-Me Parade

Social media is full of people desperately performing goodness.
“I’m so supportive!”
“I’d do anything for my friends!”
“I’m such a girl’s girl!”

…all posted moments before they screenshot your messages, steal your ideas, or ghost you because someone shinier came along.

Pick-me behaviour isn’t just about begging men for attention - it’s morphed into people begging everyone for validation. They’ll shapeshift into whatever version of “likeable” earns them followers, sympathy, or clout.

And when you fall for it?
When you believe someone is exactly who they portray online?

You’re not stupid.
You’re not gullible.
You’re not naive.

You just can’t imagine being this vindictive, two-faced, and self-serving - because you don’t operate that way.

The Rise of the Self-Serving Era

Since Covid, something in society shifted.
People became… well… selfish.
Deeply, unapologetically, mind-numbingly selfish.

Community?
Village mentality?
Showing up for one another?

Apparently those got left behind in 2019 with banana bread recipes and 5G conspiracy theories.

Now it’s all:
“What benefits me?”
“What can I get out of this person?”
“What clout does this connection give me?”

Sheep don’t all look the same anymore.
They come in every aesthetic - spiritual, corporate, girlboss, soft life, gym life, cottagecore - but behind the curated vibes?
It’s all the same: self-interest first.

You’re Not the Problem - Their Lack of Integrity Is

Here’s the thing people don’t say enough:

You’re not wrong for trusting.
You’re not weak for believing.
You’re not foolish for giving people the benefit of the doubt.

It’s not a character flaw to assume others have the same heart as you.

You just couldn’t fathom that some individuals wake up in the morning with the emotional depth of a teaspoon and the moral compass of a broken sat-nav.

Some people operate on convenience, not connection.
They only show up when it makes them look good.
They only “support” when it benefits their image.
They only draw close when you’re shiny and doing well - and vanish the moment life gets messy.

Those aren’t your people.
Those are opportunists with ring lights.

“My Friends Don’t Even Share My Business” - And Here’s Why

We’ve all seen those posts:
“My own friends and family don’t support my small business.”

Well… there’s a reason for that.

People don’t support what reminds them they’re not doing enough with their own lives.
People don’t uplift what threatens their comfort zone.
People don’t celebrate what they secretly envy.

For the spiritual girlies:
The universe removes people long before your blessings arrive - because those people were never meant to share the view from the top.

If they can’t stand beside you when you’re stressed, grieving, exhausted, rebuilding, battling your demons, or clawing your way through the chaos…

But turn up only when things look positive, easy, or advantageous?

That’s not a tribe.
That’s not a village.
That’s not a soul family.

That’s an audience - waiting to clap only when it benefits them.

The Universe Isn’t Breaking You - It’s Filtering Your Circle

Your world isn’t falling apart.
It’s being reorganised.

You think you’re losing people.
But you’re actually losing:

  • future problems

  • future betrayals

  • future disappointments

  • and future energy vampires who would have sipped your success like a cocktail

The universe is sweeping them out so your blessings can arrive safely — without being drained, stolen, or hijacked by people who secretly wish they were you.

The Real Village Exists - It’s Just Selective

Good people exist.
Real, genuine, loyal humans who show up in the dark, not just the spotlight.

They’re rare - yes.
They’re hard to find - absolutely.
But when they arrive, they stay.

Your village isn’t missing.
It’s forming.
And the universe is making damn sure the wrong people aren’t allowed anywhere near the foundation.
